Senator Rob PORTMAN on NATO membership for Georgia: "It is time to fulfill promise made in 2008"

U.S. Senator Rob PORTMAN:
I strongly support full NATO membership for Georgia... and it is time to fulfill the promise made in the 2008 Bucharest Agreement

23.06.2021 (Caucasian Journal). Caucasian Journal has asked U.S. Senator Rob PORTMAN to share his comments on the recent visit of American Congressional Delegation to Georgia. The Senator's press secretary provided the following statement by Rob Portman:

"I strongly support full NATO membership for Georgia – their commitment to free and democratic values are in line with NATO’s and it is time to fulfill the promise made in the 2008 Bucharest Agreement.”

The NATO's "promise made  in the 2008 Bucharest Agreement", to which Senator Portman was referring, is the decision adopted at NATO Summit in Bucharest, Romania.

It reads: "NATO welcomes Ukraine’s and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations for membership in NATO.  We agreed today that these countries will become members of NATO... Therefore we will now begin a period of intensive engagement with both at a high political level to address the questions still outstanding pertaining to their MAP [Membership Action Plan] applications" (Bucharest Summit Declaration issued by the heads of state and government participating in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council in Bucharest on 3 April 2008, paragraph 23)

Regarding his visit to Georgia, Ukraine and Lithuania earlier this month, Senator Rob Portman has also stated:

“I was heartened by the productive, bipartisan meetings Senator Shaheen and I had in Georgia with Prime Minister Garbashvili, Foreign Minister Zalkaliani, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, members of Parliament, and members of civil society, in which we discussed ways to bolster democracy in Georgia.

I encouraged the Georgian leaders to continue to implement and make progress on the April 19th Agreement, electoral and judicial reforms.”

“Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia have the potential to create tremendous opportunity for their people by following through on their commitments to enact consistent democratic reforms. I was grateful to be able to travel to the region as part of a bipartisan U.S. Senate congressional delegation and express our support to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and Georgian Prime Minister Iraki Garibashvili."

Senator Jeanne SHAHEEN, Chair of the Europe and Regional Security Cooperation Subcommittee, Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Senate:
The U.S. is eager to play a supporting role to make NATO and EU membership a reality

Another member of American Congressional Delegation to Georgia, Ukraine and Lithuania was Senator Jeanne SHAHEEN, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) and Chair of the Europe and Regional Security Cooperation SFRC Subcommittee. She said:

“Ukraine and Georgia are important U.S. partners against an increasingly aggressive Russia and it is critical that we convey our solidarity with the people of Ukraine and Georgia, and encourage political leaders to continue making necessary reforms that will strengthen their democracies. We support Ukraine and Georgia in their desire to achieve their Euro-Atlantic ambitions, and the U.S. is eager to play a supporting role to make NATO and EU membership a reality”.
